5 Common Water Issues for Commercial Buildings

Here Are Some Common Water-Related Problems

Some plumbing issues may seem insignificant, but identifying and fixing these problems while they're small is vital when it comes to protecting your building. A small problem, such as a drop in water pressure, is often indicative of a larger issue, like a broken pipe. Make sure you regularly inspect your building in Onalaska, WI, for the following common water-related problems.

1. Pinhole Leaks
Pinhole leaks are common water repair issues for older buildings. Cast-iron pipes are only designed to last approximately 25 years, although certain circumstances can cause them to deteriorate sooner. Keep an eye out for silent leaks by checking for spikes in your water bill or a drastic drop in water pressure.

2. Dripping Faucets and Toilets
Much like pinhole leaks, dripping bathroom appliances can slowly, yet steadily, drive up your monthly water bill. Take the time to inspect your commercial bathrooms and make any necessary repairs.

3. Clogged Drains
Customers tend not to treat commercial bathrooms with the same respect that they would their own residential ones. This can lead to many undesirable items getting flushed and ultimately clogging your drains. This can cause a wide range of issues, from an unsightly bathroom to severe toilet overflow.

4. Low Water Pressure
Low water pressure is a good indicator of several issues, such as leaking pipes. The low pressure is a result of water escaping through the leak, and not making it to the faucet where it's supposed to make its exit.

5. Structural Damage
Cracked, bulging, or otherwise warped walls, ceilings and foundation can signal the presence of a serious leak. These deformities are caused by water accumulating within the walls and ceiling and are a good indication of a major flooding problem caused by a leaking or broken pipe.
A broken pipe backed-up toilet and clogged drain are all common plumbing issues for commercial building owners. Staying on top of the issue can help reduce the amount of damage your building suffers and keep your business running smoothly. Contact water restoration experts for professional help.

What Used to Be...

Local store front gets some much needed help.

Once upon a time not so long ago, there was a quaint little store located in a quiet little town.  The store was doing great and was a nice addition to the down town area.

One day, the owner's husband passed away unexpectedly, leaving her in shambles.  She began to move on by putting all of her energy and focus into her store.  Soon, she had begun to acquire so much merchandise, that she had run out of shelf space.

Boxes and totes, even closets began to expand with all of the stuff that she was bringing in.  The little town's people became concerned.  They called in their #WeAreLocal SERVPRO to help with the situation.  Not only were all three floors of this once beautiful building full, but the basement and the garage were also filled to the brim!

When traumatic things happen, some people are unsure of how to cope.  This owner bought things to fill the emptiness inside and created for herself a very dangerous living situation.  With the help of SERVPRO, we were able to save the building and the woman's home.

Clean is Always in Season

Carpet cleaning should be done every year especially following the spring rains.  Stains in your carpet can happen at any time. If you have the right tools, you can get some nice results on your carpet at home or business. Keep these tips in mind the next time disaster strikes!

  • Always blot spills and liquid stains. NEVER scrub. Scrubbing just pushes the stain particles further in the carpet fibers, making the stain harder to remove and accelerates deterioration. Blot the stain starting from the edges and much of the stain can be removed without other cleaning supplies.
  • Club soda works wonders in the event someone spills beer or wine on your carpet. Blot club soda on the stain. If club soda does not do the trick, mix it with a bit of white vinegar and spray the solution on the stain. Let sit for 15 minutes and then blot it up.
  • Scrape off stuck on debris. Families with kids need the best arsenal of carpet cleaning tips because children can do a lot of damage in a short period of time. When candy or gum are stuck to the floor, try scraping it off with a knife before applying any moisture.

The best carpet cleaning tip, is to call SERVPRO of La Crosse County for regular deep cleanings. This can help protect the integrity of the flooring and ensure that any stains or soil will not cause any permanent issues.

5 Culprits of Roof Leaks in Commercial Buildings

4/6/2018 (Permalink)

Roof leaks can happen anytime-have you done your maintenance checks?

Sitting in the lobby of a major law firm in  downtown La Crosse, John felt a light sprinkle hit his hand as he was checking his email.

"Maybe it was just in my mind" he said to himself as he brushed the feeling off as accident.  Then came another drip....and another.....John looked to the ceiling to find one of the ceiling tiles with a ring of moisture.

There were strong winds and rain in the prior week but today was sunny and not a cloud in the sky.  It was obvious to John that something wasn't right so he contacted his building's maintenance manager and asked him to take a look.

The maintenance manager knew the water was coming from the roof , and that it was probably one of the 5 problems that normally cause water damages in commercial roofs.

  • DAMAGED PERIMETER FLASHING

  • OPEN ROOF PENETRATIONS

  • ROOFING MEMBRANE DAMAGE

  • AGE OF THE ROOFING SYSTEM

  • PONDING WATER OR CLOGGED DRAINAGE

Once the source was identified the work began to clean up the damaged building materials that the leak had caused.  Trying to do this while still keeping the office running meant calling SERVPRO to help mitigate the damage.

Industrial Fire Leads to Major Water Damage

4/12/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of La Crosse County helps Industrial and Commercial Businesses rebound with minimal business interruptions.

An industry leader in building materials recently experienced a fire on one of their machines inside the factory.  Although the fire itself was small, contained, and quickly extinguished, the smoke triggered the automatic water sprinkler system.  The result was a very wet building, including their entire inventory of doors, trim, and other wood materials.  SERVPRO of La Crosse responded immediately to help extract the water, and set air movers and dehumidifiers.  This quick action helped prevent potential secondary damages to their wood products, and ultimately their profits

Management stated, “We were very satisfied with the overall service provided by SERVPRO.”

In just two days, they were back up and running at 100%.  SERVPRO of La Crosse is always happy to help businesses make it “Like it never even happened”.  We offer 24 hour emergency services nights, weekends, and holidays.
